Guided checks
A browser cannot see battery wear, disk health or memory errors. These short guides show you how, using tools already on your laptop.
Back up important data before running any test. NXBIRD is not responsible for data loss.
Battery health
- Press the Windows key, type “Command Prompt” and open it.
- Run this command:
powercfg /batteryreport - It shows where it saved battery-report.html. Open that file in your browser.
- In “Installed batteries”, compare “Design capacity” with “Full charge capacity”.
- Good result
- Full charge capacity is 70% or more of the design capacity.
- Needs attention
- Below about 70% means the battery is worn and will not last long on a charge.
Hard disk / SSD health
- Download CrystalDiskInfo from its official site and run it.
- Look at “Health Status” for each drive.
- Quick built-in check: in Command Prompt, run:
wmic diskdrive get model,status
The built-in check is basic only. CrystalDiskInfo gives a clearer picture.
- Good result
- CrystalDiskInfo shows “Good”, and the built-in check shows “OK”.
- Needs attention
- “Caution” or “Bad” means: back up your data now and get the drive checked.
RAM (memory) test
- Save your work and close all apps first.
- Press the Windows key and type “Windows Memory Diagnostic”.
- Choose “Restart now and check for problems”. The test takes about 10–20 minutes.
- Good result
- After the restart, Windows reports that no memory errors were found.
- Needs attention
- Any memory error means a RAM stick may be faulty and should be checked.
Full hardware details (optional)
- Press Windows key + R, type this and press Enter:
dxdiag - The “Display” tab shows your graphics chip and its driver.
- Good result
- No problems are listed in the “Notes” box.
- Needs attention
- Errors in the “Notes” box are worth showing to a technician.
Battery health
- Open System Settings and choose Battery.
- Look at Battery Health (click the info button next to it for details).
- Good result
- Battery health shows “Normal”.
- Needs attention
- “Service Recommended” means the battery should be checked or replaced.
Disk check
- Open Disk Utility (search for it with Spotlight: ⌘ + Space).
- Select your main drive and click First Aid, then Run.
- Good result
- First Aid finishes and says the drive appears to be OK.
- Needs attention
- If First Aid reports errors it cannot repair, back up your data now and get the drive checked.
Full diagnostics (Apple Diagnostics)
- Save your work and shut down the Mac.
- Intel Macs: turn on and hold the D key. Apple silicon Macs: press and hold the power button until you see startup options.
- Follow Apple's on-screen steps. They can change between macOS versions, so check Apple Support.
- Good result
- Apple Diagnostics reports no issues found.
- Needs attention
- Any reference code it shows points to a part that needs checking. Note the code down.
For every laptop
Charger light
- A steady light usually means charging. Blinking often means low battery or a charging fault.
- Light meanings differ by brand, so check your laptop's manual.
- Try another wall socket and check the cable for cuts or bends.
- Good result
- The light is steady and the battery level goes up while plugged in.
- Needs attention
- No light, blinking, or the level does not go up. Never use a damaged charger.
Heating and fan
- Use the laptop normally for 10–15 minutes on a hard, flat surface.
- Feel the base and listen to the fan while nothing heavy is running.
- Good result
- Warm under load, quiet when idle, no sudden shutdowns.
- Needs attention
- A very hot base, a loud fan when idle or sudden shutdowns usually mean dust or a cooling fault.
